Here are some practical reminders on how to fulfill your Lenten Journey.
1. Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent are days of Abstinence.
Abstinence applies to those 14 and over. Abstinence prohibits the eating of meat.
2. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fasting.
Fasting applies to all those between ages of 18 and 59, who are in good health. Fasting means one full meal and two smaller meals a day.
3. There are no holy days of obligation during Lent.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday have no obligation attached, but everyone is encouraged to participate in these liturgies.
4. During Lent everyone is encouraged to lead a life of prayer, charity and abstinence.
Everyone should use these 40 days to increase their prayer life by reading of scripture, devotion to the Eucharist, praying of the rosary and attending daily Mass.
Everyone should live a life of Charity - helping those in need, by living a Christ like life.
Everyone is encouraged to abstain or deny himself or herself something they enjoy, whether it is alcohol, caffeine, sweets, TV, movies, etc.
5. During Lent everyone is encouraged to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.
