Knights of Columbus

Little Flower Council 6615 held their Wives Appreciation Dinner and Awards Banquet on March 13. There was a good turn out for the event and those attending it thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The wives were served a grand steak dinner by their husbands and presented an appreciation gift by the council. A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Father John Connell for being the councils Chaplain over the past few years. A Certificate of Merit was presented to Church Secretary Amy King for all the extra help she has done for the Knights of Columbus. Brother Tom Eckelkamp received the

Knight of the Year Award for the 2003/2004 fraternal year. Mike, Vickie, Ashley, and Jonathon Henning were presented the councils Family of the Year Award. Congratulations to all our winners on their well deserved awards.

The council held its annual Insurance Night March 21. Our insurance agent, Jim Palmer, gave an excellent presentation on the history of the Knights of Columbus. He also explained the many fraternal benefits of belonging to the order, as well as outlining its superior insurance program. The council furnished hamburgers, hot dogs, and

drinks. The members brought potluck side dishes and desserts. There was a good turnout for the Insurance Night. The attendees had an enjoyable time.

On Sunday, April 4, the council members treated the Parish Religious Education (PRE) teachers to an appreciation breakfast. Fourteen of the PRE teachers participated in the breakfast. Thank you once again to all the PRE teachers for the fine work and many dedicated hours they spend for our Catholic youth.

First Communion
We are going into our last class times before these 28 students will receive Eucharist for the first time. We have learned a lot starting with belonging to a church community. For most of them it is St. Theresas parish. Through receiving the sacrament of Baptism we become a member of our community. We learn about Jesus by celebrating important seasons and days like Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter etc. We read and learn from scripture that Jesus loved to eat with people because they would ask him questions and he was able to share knowledge that way. Stories like Zacchaes, the multiplications of loaves and fish and of course the Last Supper. He gave us the Eucharist that night and at Mass we remember what He did for us. We also hear His words proclaimed through Fr. John: This is my Body-This is my Blood-Do this in memory of

me. Together we are discovering that it takes a lot of people to help at Mass time. Father cannot do it by himself. When these students make their First Communion, they really will know (on their level) what this sacrament is all about. Please continue to pray for them and if you can, come join them May 2nd during the 8:30am Mass.

Boy Scouts
Very seldom do we see anything about scouting in our newspaper but again I have the good fortune to be able to instruct Drew Emerson, Jonathon Henning, Aaron and Sean Smith, Tanis Elrod, Colby Barnes and Trent Sugg for the Ad Altare Dei (to the altar of God) medal. This medal will be given to the students after they have finished all of the requirements set forth by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. It promotes for the scouts a Christian way of life in their church community. The program is based on the seven Sacraments. The Sacraments are the primary means toward spiritual growth. As Boy scouts they learn that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing his obligation to God. Spiritual growth and scouting go hand in hand. I will keep you informed about what we are doing. It is not a short, sweet and to the point program. Quite the contrary. It might take about

6 months to finish everything. They truly will be ready then to wear the emblem very proudly.

In the meantime I am working with one proud Cub Scout on his Parvuli Dei-children of God-medal. Blake Bush comes on Sundays after the 11am Mass and works hard on requirements for this medal. He is half way there and should receive this religious medal sometimes in May. Way to go Blake.

New Church Planned for Mabelvale Area
Taken from Mabelvale Newsdated October 3, 1947

The building of a new Church to be located near the intersection of Geyer Springs and Baseline Roads a few miles Southwest of Little Rock to be known at the St. Andrews Cathedral Mission church was considered and planned at two meetings held during the month of September by some fifty Catholic families of the community.

The first meeting held on the lawn of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Daven, September 7, was presided over by His Excellency, Bishop Albert L. Fletcher, and was called to order by Rt. Rev. Msgr. John B. Scheper, pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Attending this meeting besides the Rev. Joseph M. Burns of St. Andrews Cathedral and the Rev. John M.

Bann were representatives of thirty-five Catholic families. The basic problems of building an appropriate church and the principles of properly locating such a mission church were considered at the first meeting in relation to plots of ground offered as a gift.

An adequate plot of ground of two and a half acres offered as a donation by Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. DeLeuil, subject to the approval of the Most Reverend Bishop, was favored as the likely location of the new mission church. Located at the intersection of Geyer Springs and Baseline Roads, the plot measures 165 by 660 feet. It was at this location that the second meeting of last Sunday was held, which was presided over by Father Burns, Rector of the Cathedral, and at which

some fifty persons attended.

Mr. Robert Meurer was elected general chairman of the church committee. The Chairman of the building committee is Mr. E. C. Daven, and Mr. Wilbur Jett was elected treasurer. Mrs. Wilbur Jett is secretary.

Funds, necessary to build the Church, will be raised by donations and by various activities which the community will sponsor. Any contributions will be gladly received and may be given to any member of the committee or mailed to the treasurer, Mr. Wilbur Jett, Rt 3, Box 469, Little Rock.
