Altar Server Instructions
CROSS BEARER
Get to mass about 10 minutes early and sign in on the sheet in the sacristy.Get dressed.
Go get cross from behind altar.
First in line up.
Always hold cross with both hands. Eyes line up with feet of cross. Hands should be separated to stop cross from wobbling.
Song begins and Father nods to begin entrance. Walk slowly but confidently.
Line up with podium on far right. Bow only - do not try to genuflect.
Go through doorway and put cross on stand. Go on around and sit on side bench. Sit still with your hands in your lap. Remember - everyone can see everything you do.
When Father goes down to get gifts, you get red book off side table and place on left side of altar. Get wine chalice with napkins and place on little red cross in the center of the corporal. (Small place mat) Go back to your seat.
Go up for communion immediately after Father eats the bread himself. If you do not want wine turn and go to your seat. Return to your seat after taking wine.
When Father goes back to his seat, items will be placed one the right corner of the table. You will pick up these items and place them on the little side table. Carry them one at a time. Your main items to pick up are the red book and the wine chalice.
Father will say final "Let us pray" this is your queue to go through the doorway and get the cross. Come on around and stand just inside the doorway until Father has finished the prayer. When he leaves you go and line up in front of the podium. When Father genuflects you will bow, turn and lead procession out of church. slowly but confidently.
After mass take cross back to it place behind the altar.
BOOK BEARER
Get to mass about 10 minutes early and sign in on the sign sheet in the sacristy.Get dressed.
Light two candles on altar.
You line up behind the cross bearer - on the right side. Remember you are a partner with server #3. You two should be side by side.
Song begins and Father nods to begin entrance. Your hands should be formed like you are praying. Walk in slowly but confidently.
You should line up in front of the candle on the right side.
You need go genuflect when Father does.
Go between altar and podium and sit in chair. Put your hands in your lap and feed on the floor (if possible).
When Father says, "Let us pray" you reach down and get the small red book. Stand in front of Father and he will take the book and open it to the proper place. Hold the book so it rests on your chest and your hands in the bottom of the book. Father will take the book and close it. You go back to your seat and put the book back in its place.
Go with Father down to get the gifts. Go between the podium and the altar. Father will hand you the water. When Father turns to go back, you will follow him and join the other server at the altar. You two are now a team. Father will take the water and add to the wine and then hand it back to you. Both servers will turn together and go to the side table. The other server will pick up the plate and towel. Both of you will return to the altar. You will pour the water over Father's hands. When he raises his hands you will stop pouring the water. He will bow to you and you will return the bow. Both servers will return the items to the side table and sit on the side benches.
Go up for communion immediately after Father eats the bread himself. If you do not want wine turn and go to your seat. Return to your seat after taking wine.
When Father returns to his seat is you queue to return to your chair beside him. If there are more than two items on the corner of the altar, you can help return these items to the side table.
Father will again say, "Let us pray" and you will get the book and stand in front of him and hand him the book just like before.
Father will start to leave and you will do the same. Walk between the altar and the podium; go to your line up place in front of the candle. Genuflect when Father does. You will then turn and wait for the cross bearer to proceed. Join the other server and proceed slowly but confidently out of the church.
Third Server
Get to mass about 10 minutes early and sign in on the sign sheet in the sacristy.Get dressed.
Light two candles on altar.
You line up behind the cross bearer - on the left side. Remember you are a partner with the book bearer. You two should be side by side.
Song begins and Father nods to begin entrance. Your hands should be formed like you are praying. Walk in slowly but confidently.
You should line up in front of the candle on the left side.
You need go genuflect when Father does.
Go between altar and baptismal and sit in chair. Put your hands in your lap and feed on the floor (if possible).
Go with Father down to get the gifts. Go between the baptismal and the altar. Father will hand you the wine. Father will turn and go toward the podium, you will turn and to towards the baptismal along with the other server. You two are now a team. Father will take the wine set it on the altar. Both servers will turn together and go to the side table. You will pick plate and place the towel over your arm. Both of you will return to the altar. Hold the plate while the other server pours the water over Father's hands. He will then take the towel, dry his hands and lay it back on your arm. He will bow to you and you will return the bow. Both servers will return the items to the side table and sit on the side benches.
Go up for communion immediately after Father eats the bread himself. If you do not want wine turn and go to your seat. Return to your seat after taking wine.

You will then turn and wait for the cross bearer to proceed. Join the other server and proceed slowly but confidently out of the church.
